Following an exhaustive environmental review process, the preservative process used to treat YellaWood® brand products was awarded the coveted Environmentally Preferable Product certification by Scientific Certification Systems. This watershed moment marked the first time a wood treatment process received such an honor.
The Life-Cycle Assessment followed rigorous international standards established by ISO, the leading international standards setting organization. This evaluation process was performed by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS). For nearly three decades, SCS has developed internationally recognized standards and certification programs aimed at establishing the highest levels of environmental improvements, social accountability, and product performance. As the leader in green building product certification since 1990, SCS was the first company to offer manufacturers a program for verifying the accuracy of environmental claims on products. SCS runs several certification programs for building products, including the Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) certification.
EPP Life-Cycle Benefits:
First Wood Treatment Process to Receive EPP Status
The technology used to treat YellaWood® brand products is the first wood preservative process to be EPP certified by Scientific Certification Systems based on Life-Cycle Assessment.
First Wood Treatment Process to Complete Life-Cycle Assessment Studies
The wood treatment process was analyzed by SCS under an exhaustive environmental review process called Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), in accordance with rigorous international standards set by ISO, the leading international standards setting organization. The LCA studies are in compliance with ISO standards 14044 and 14025.
Reduced Energy Use
The preservative system reduces total energy use by approximately 80% and greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Largely Eliminates Copper Releases
Wood products treated with the MicroPro® treatment process result in the release of significantly less copper into aquatic and terrestrial environments when compared to standard treated wood products. The very small amount released bonds readily to organic matter in the soil and becomes biologically inactive, thus nearly eliminating eco-toxic impacts.
Reduced Air Emissions
The solution containing the copper preservative formula is more concentrated than the industry standard. As a result, fewer trucks are required for transport. Fewer trucks, combined with the absence of monoethanolamine (MEA) in the production process, result in a reduction of air pollutants from tailpipe emissions and associated impacts, including: soot, nitrous oxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter, and reduced impacts of acid rain, smog, and oceanic acidification.
Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The absence of MEA in the production process, combined with the reduced use of fuel and fewer trucks, means that using MicroPro® technology in lieu of standard wood treatment formulations reduces an estimated 20,000 tons or more of greenhouse gas emissions each year. (This is equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 2,200 SUVs.)
Building green and protecting our environment is more important now than it has ever been. So, when you're building that deck or gazebo, make sure you use the wood that's treated with the first EPP-certified wood preservative process. It's one more reason YellaWood® brand products are the brand of choice for outdoor building.
